Pros

Stability of the company due to lack of pressures companies that are public have. Our mission is to serve our client's need for retirement and insurance products that provide a solid return and low risk. We provide the means for financial security and comfortable retirements for individuals that work in fields that ordinarily do not provide as much monetary compensations and other fields.

The working environment is relaxed and employees of all levels are respectful of each other. Team work with and across business and IT groups is the norm and obstruction is the exception.

The benefits provided are either comparable or better than other companies and include a company funded pension plan that contributes 5% to 20% of your salary based on age.

Cons

The majority of employees with many years of service at TIAA-CREF are not aware of industry standard practices or how to use technology to provide improved repeatable processes.

The conversion from a home-grown legacy system to an industry standard system was not measured by the right criteria and has done little to improve customer service to both institutional and individual clients. Because the conversion failed to answer the reasons that a company would choose to change its technical platform, previous problems remain in place and new problems have been introduced.

Senior management seems oblivious to the root causes of customer service issues and opts to address these types of issues by dint of force (hiring contingent workers, mandatory overtime) instead of improving processes. Additionally, the Executive Vice Presidents (direct reports to the CEO) report incorrect statistics and achievements either through their own obfuscation or the fraudulence of the senior management reporting to them. This serves to prevent remediation of basic core problems that if addressed would make current concerns of lowering clients costs moot.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either listen to the workers in the trenches or get out of the way. Face up to fixing the base root problems in the company, provide the means to do so, or retire and let us do the work ourselves.

    Pros

You will gain experience working in a high pressure, high paced, and always changing expectations.

    Cons

There is no work life balance. Company if full of clicks, so you only get promoted based on who you associate with rather than what you know. Most managers are imcompentant in that they have no idea how to do the job that they are supposed to evaluate you on. The moral is low and everyone is out to cover their own backsides. Consultants are made to fill powerless to actually be able to help clients, while all the responsibility is being placed on them to meet service levels and other goals. Dehe ad end job that will eventually drain you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop promoting people to positions base on their ability to tow the company line. Start listening to the people who actually do the job.

    Pros

Compensation and benefits, good training on products offered

    Cons

Mid level mgmt needs to be scrutunized-many-not all-are unable to manage due to incompetence or just plain lack of mgmt skills-upper mgmt has no clue as to how to run a company that needs to have SERVICE-nuff said!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to field personnel and participants as to what needs to happen-your client facing people are not able to do the "sales" job that you ask of them because you apparently do not understand sales and service-your field people spend way too much time on data entry and reporting-this needs to be done by back office folks.
