Pros

Very intelligent workforce and stimulating work environment. Co-workers will go out of their way to help you get up to speed. Knowledge sharing is a high priority. Resources are adequate and the workplace environment is very pleasant. Like a college campus.

Cons

IT is a fiefdom. They do not like to work with the business side and vice versa. TIAA seems to have a hard time realizing they are in business to make money and that they answer to clients. They seem to think that since they service college employees that they are themselves a college.

Advice to Management

Break down the walls between divisions. Do the work needed to convince all the various groups that they are all on the same team with the same goals.

    Pros

Client Loyalty and one can feel proud they work for a company that is extremely ethical.

    Cons

Upside is greatly diminished if you have not come from outside of TIAA-CREF over the last 5 years or so.

    Advice to Management

This is a great company. However, it's imperative that you keep the culture that has made this company great. To do this you must BALANCE hiring executives from the outside vs hiring internal talent from the inside. You're about as far from the GE model as one can get, but you still have time to make it there. Good luck!
