Pros

TIAA-CREF is a good company with a commitment to core values. The total compensation package is very competitive and they offer excellent benefits. They have a unique client base and solid long term performance. Their long term approach to investment management as well their approach to risk management is confidence inspiring.

Cons

Senior leadership is out of touch with what is happening on the front line. Often times their span of control is so broad that there is no way that they can maintain a sense of what is really happening. Middle management is known for shielding the EMT from the realities facing the front line and telling them what they want to hear as opposed to what they need to hear. T/C is a company where a number of middle managers have been awarded roles that they are not suited to based on tenure.

Advice to Management

I would recommend conducting more skip level interviews with employees at all levels. I have seen T/C loose a lot of good people because of bad managers, myself included.

    Pros

The people you work with on a daily basis are very intelligent, dedicated and extremely hardworking. Benefits are decent. Good contribution by the company to employees' retirement plans.

    Cons

Unfortunately, like many big companies decisions are made based on politics and not on the merit. It seems like the company has lost its soul and forgotten the reason for its existence. Too bad as this was once an excellent company with an outstanding and very ethical reputation. Not so much any more.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at your senior management team and shake things up where needed. Eliminate some of the redundant layers of management. Appreciate the folks who are actually doing the work.

    Pros

Competitive compensation package, good pension benefits, nice physical work environment.

    Cons

After leaving the company for quite some time, I'm still haunted by the bad experience I had working there. So join this organization if you.....

    - Don't mind watching favortism practiced everyday and flowing through the performance appraisal process.

    - Are not affected by the "world class" politics that renders the organization disfunctional.

    - Don't get discouraged when you see individuals in your management's posse get promoted and protected though they are incompetent and in some cases uneducated.

    - Are not afraid that your own strong performance will inevitably motivate your colleagues (especially those who are incompetent) to step up their efforts to take you out at the knees.

    - Can't be shaken by treats coming from individuals in senior management or HR when you provide honest feedback.

    - Don't mind getting just lip service when you well exceed your performance objectives year after year.

    - Don't care that senior management has a narrow minded view of diversity.

    - Don't mind having an extremely bad work experience that will erode your self confidence for years to come.

    Advice to Management

Ferguson needs to have a complete reorganization of his management structure and rid the organization of all the "politicians." Hire real leaders and strong talents that are truly committed to the company's mission and values. Do not allow the mob to continue running this organization to the ground.
