Current Employee - Merchandise Coordinator
Current Employee - Merchandise Coordinator

I have been working at TJ Maxx full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The benefits are pretty good.

Cons

They don't seem to choose people in their employment to move up. they hire from outside.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

If they gave people that have been with the company for a while the chance to move up they would have more loyal associates

I worked at TJ Maxx part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -it's a job
-other employees are nice, probably because we mutually bonded over how awful it was

    Cons

-Schedule comes out weekly, often isn't up until Friday or Saturday evenings (Schedule starts on Sunday)
    -Not flexible with employees
-I got a .50 raise in three years of working. And that's it.
-The schedules are not set. They say no one would work twice in the same weekend, but they consider Saturday and Sunday different weekends. I quit because they wouldn't give me a set schedule.
-They push the TJ Maxx credit cards on customers. You get yelled at if you don't get an application a day.(The cards have terribly interest rates)
-Very little room for promotion unless you're over 40

I worked at TJ Maxx part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

TJ MAXX prides itself on bringing merchandise to customers at discounted prices, and they are usually able to deliver. This and the easily understand returns policy keeps most customers happy, and makes the jobs of the sales associate much more pleasant.

    Cons

The large variety of merchandise in the stores makes it somewhat difficult to keep track of products, as well as difficult for the stores to maintain a neat appearance. Turnover is high, as is most of retail & other positions that employ younger workers. Wages are low (usually on par with the current minimum wage) which can be frustrating. They are low to start but seeing an employee that does not take pride in their job and does not put forth much effort being paid the same wage as an "good" employee is upsetting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to hire enough employees to be simultaneously 1. processing in the back 2. working customer service/registers 3. jewelry/fitting rooms 4. walking the floor. Having employees throughout the store means there are more eyes on the floor which does bring down theft (think SHRINKAGE), creates a more organized store, and keeps customers happy. Understaffed stores often equate to coming in UNDER the sales goals and ABOVE the amount they are comfortable with for merchandise theft.
