Pros

- they truly give, and do care to improve the quality of their giving
- the majority of the company is genuinely kind and considerate
- they have workout classes

Cons

- there are no clear company goals- in reality the executive team wants to increase sales, which is fine for any business but due to the giving aspect of the business model it is a tricky position, as increasing their bottom dollar makes the business seem insincere about their commitment to giving
- - there is no transparency with their numbers. only a select few individuals know the profit margins and revenue, as a result the majority of the company is working blindly on good faith, which in truth seems to be running out
- The founder is selling the business, which is absolutely fine if that’s what’s best for the state of the business. The problem here is how the executive team handled this news. They did not prep any of the staff, who found out through the Financial Times, and during a meeting to clear up the news, the staff was told that ultimately we are “a family”. This statement is condescending and insulting, we are a business and hiding behind the façade of a movement or family is taking away the little credibility they have left.
- HR does not communicate anything- they talk, but nothing is ever said, no information is ever revealed, instead individuals leave feeling agitated and unfulfilled

Advice to ManagementAdvice

- HR needs to improve their communication,
- management needs to set goals
- they need to hire management who have experience managing
- Instead of establishing company wide values, establish company goals.

    Pros

TOMS is a company with a passion for giving making the people friendly and supportive of one another; they also like to have fun together. Different company traditions like the opportunity to go on a Giving trip, attend a company-hosted, 3-day annual retreat, participate in local service projects, and have various events and happy hours make it fun.

Most folks work on a laptop and their desks are in large spacious areas. This promotes face to face interaction and group brainstorming for "the next big thing".

The office environment is fun - spiral slides take you from the second floor down the the first floor where a barista serves up your favorite coffee or tea beverage free of charge every morning. You can expect to be challenged to an afternoon ping pong game to get over the daily slump, and the dog friendly environment means cuddly friends to say hello to during your walk through the hallways.

A different food truck comes everyday during breakfast and lunch in case you didn't pack one for yourself. You can burn off the additional calories in the free, nightly fitness programs offered on-site. Classes range from kickboxing to yoga and TRX.

It's not uncommon to leave work with your colleagues to get happy hour or grab dinner together. Your desk will likely get decorated on your birthday, and the several lounge areas allow you to do some work on your laptop from a couch with your feet up.

    Cons

As the company is rapidly growing and changing, the leadership team hasn't done its due diligence to clearly define department objectives, company direction, or planning. Many employees feel like they are without leadership and guidance and work long hours without clear goals.

Others are frustrated that their needs for career growth and opportunity are going unheard, and that managers lack the ability to empower and promote their employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With consideration to the "cons" listed above, hiring for culture fit, communication, business savvy, and people-management ability is key.

The leadership needs to continue a more thorough and just-in-time approach to communication with their teams.

All managers and HR need to pay attention to career growth opportunity and not wait when opportunities are available - it results in a loss of good talent.

    Pros

TOMS has a great giving philosophy and at its core, really wants to change the world through business. It's hard not to be inspired by that, and the opportunity to experience that first hand on a giving trip is inspiring. The work climate is casual and young, so many co-workers become close friends.

    Cons

Lack of transparency on changing business environment; lack of promotion from within; an HR team that doesn't listen to employee dissatisfaction and work/collaborate on a solution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen and trust your employees. Early employees came to the company taking pay cuts because they believed in the mission and wanted to contribute to a greater good, not because they lacked skills and experience.
