Pros

-40 hour work week
-warm and friendly workplace for those who blend well into the existing culture
-new leadership, new investors, and new management

Cons

-internal environment suffering from a lot of uncertainty; creating a high stress, weak morale environment within the ranks
-It takes time for changes in assumptions, values and attitudes to really stick and spread in a ‘dyed-in-the-wool’ mature culture like Talbots.
Talbots has mostly a reactive culture - not proactive

Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Embrace technology in the supply chain faster
-Communicate more effectively up and down the hierarchy chain
-Exercise better control of the development/sampling budget

    Pros

There are few pros left at Talbots. Management has taken away the important benefits (quality health insurance, pension, etc.)
Discount used to be a pro--but now with all the promotions employees can wait til there is a promotion equal to their discount.
Coworkers are the best pro--you end up being friends with most of the women you work with. This includes management.

    Cons

Little consistency in what the "mission" is. A phone call can totally change what the day's plan is.
Cutting hours--with little or short notice and this usually ends up with shoplifting incidents because they can see the store is understaffed.
Corporate doesn't have a clue as to how the stores operate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together and defind an overall strategy. Also, be honest with employees, including store management. Get back to how the company was managed in the 80s and 90s--when it was a dynamic company that always put its employes and customers first.

There could be more opportunities for temporary employees to advance

    Pros

Learning how to do the job correctly is not hard. The discount for employees is wonderful.

    Cons

As a temporary employee, even when I come back to my same position after being at school, there is no opportunity to get a raise. Although the salary is higher than minimum wage, it would be nice to be rewarded for hard work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If there is a problem with a machine inside a store, they should be making sure that the machine gets fixed as soon as possible, whether parts have to be shipped overnight or not. They should be making sure that the working environment is safe and suitable for employees.
