Tampa General Hospital – “Great place to go to work day in and day out, but not so good money.

Tampa General Hospital Transplant Assistant in Tampa, FL:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

The best reasons to work for Tampa General are because of its reputation as one of the best hospitals in the southeast, the experience you will get from working there, and the feeling of belonging to a family.

TGH has one of the highest levels of medical service in the area so its great for those who want to work with a wide variety of specialties.

You get a lot of experience from the wide range of tasks and the constant change happening at TGH and learning to adapt to the constant change.

Finally, when you work at TGH, you do feel like you belong to the TGH family. I can honestly say that it was the best place to go to work to every day out of all the place I have ever worked at because people were down to earth and easy to talk with so you didn't dread having to work with these people.

Oh I almost forgot, TGH has an awesome tuition payment for its employees that I am very grateful for. They paid for 100% of my classes up front so I did not have to pay and get reimbursed. All I would have to do is submit my grades at the end of the semester and as long as you passed, you were fine. But I knew a few coworkers who failed some classes and the only penalty from TGH was that they would not pay for them to re-take the class. So employees didn't have to pay TGH back which I thought was pretty awesome.

Cons

The downsides of working at TGH are the salary, benefits, and lack of career advancement.

I was a transplant assistant working my butt off trying to keep up with the demands of the transplant coordinators and the office and for the money I was getting paid, I could have made more working as a registrar at admissions or in the ER and had a lot less stress and responsibilities.

Also, TGH does not have a 401k and does not match anything, which I feel is really lame considering the magnitude of TGH and how much of yourself you give to the hospital. Also, I thought it was very rude of TGH to charge the employees for parking even after they owned the garage. I'm sorry, but I shouldn't have to pay to go to work.

The biggest problem I had with TGH, though, was the lack of career advancement. Although they claim that you can work your way up, that's really only for clinical positions. After I earned my bachelor's, I really wanted to work in HR, Accounting, or even as an assistant to one of the VPs, just somewhere where I could utilize my skills and have more responsibility. However, the opportunities just were not available. I even talked to one of the placement people at TGH and they were no help at all. She just told me to wait until something opened and maybe they would consider me. Sorry but after 4 years at TGH working my way through college and giving them my all, I wasn't thrilled with my choices after I graduated.

Advice to Senior Management

The evaluation system is crap. I worked my ass off day in and day out and you find the one tiny thing to hold on to (a co-worked and I did not speak for months after she insulted me at work, I did not let it affect my work, but because there was tension between us, I was told that my teamwork was bad) and let it overtake the entire evaluation.
