Former Employee - Sales Floor Team Member (Hardlines) in Brea, CA

I worked at Target part-time (more than a year)

Pros

Awesome coworkers, lively and fun company culture/environment, great training, caring management (if you were lucky enough to have good managers at your store). Free snacks in the break room.

Cons

Nothing that is unexpected for retail: occasionally rude guests, hectic

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give recognition to all team members, not just your favorites. Don't give the same responsibilities to the same people all the time (i.e. ad take down or go-backs) to reduce burn out.

I have been working at Target full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Amazing brand
    Even more amazing people
    Work/Life balance is great
    Lots of challenging work

    Cons

Senior management sometimes just doesn't get it
Decisions are made based on political motivations rather than what's best for the guest
Sometimes Target is it's own works enemy
Culture that is afraid to take risks and fail

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your team - give them autonomy to make decisions, to take a risk (or two) and fail/learn...

I worked at Target part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

What it lacks in pay it makes up for in benefits. Very LGBT friendly. ETLs and management take the time to get to know every team member by name.

    Cons

Way too much emphasis on the red card. ETLs push cashiers to get red card apps so far that they end up harassing the guests. Also, the way in which card scores are calculated is unfair and outdated.

Pay is in no way competitive. All cashiers start out at fifty cents above minimum wage (regardless of experience), and yearly "raises" seem to be capped at about twenty cents (at least for cashiers).

A lot of Target's "language" is confusing. For example, in my first few months at Target, I was talked to, in private, by a few GSAs and ETLs, and told it was a "coaching". I found out (almost too late) that a "coaching" is basically a warning of some sort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the red card score algorithm (prompted conversions should not count for more than unprompted conversions).
