Current Employee - Cashier in Irvine, CA
Current Employee - Cashier in Irvine, CA

I have been working at Target part-time (less than an year)

Pros

-Very flexible with scheduling. Started in July and had school in August. Was allowed to change my availability without much fuss
-friendly coworkers. Everyone is super friendly and not because they have to. Made great friends
-Decent pay
-Very structured break/lunch system. Doens't make you work excessively long without a break

Cons

-Red cards. Cashiering is already repetitive/boring/stressful enough without GSTL's constantly reminding you to ask guests for red cards. It wouldn't kill them to give some incentives for cashiers who get frequent red cards or who makes the effort. A "shout out" on the walkies is meaningless to some.
-Rude and difficult customers.
-Long never ending lines
-Poor training. Your "real" training is when you're on a lane by yourself and asking other experienced cashiers how to do _________. The training for cashiers is a joke. Spending under two hours shadowing experienced cashiers is NOT enough
-Too hard to cross train. Too many requirements.
-Not many chances to move up

Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Treat your team members better. Give them some incentives if they have a certain amount of red cards. Recognize their hard work. Appreciate them more. Interacting with hundreds of customers daily can take it's toll on someone.
-Actually train your cashiers properly

The 18-month department rotation is only an excuse to not promote people until they want to

I worked at Target full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Stores are generally liked by consumers. Great retail technology, especially for Assets Protection.

    Cons

If you are an Executive Team Leader, district management will advise you have to be in your department for 12-18 months before rotating to a new one. However, I rotated within several departments in under a year and others who tried were told they could not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If employees are performing at a high level, don't throw the "18-month" time frame in their face to avoid telling them why you won't rotate them to a new department so they can train quicker.

Mediocre experience full of "best practice" BS with no clear direction

I worked at Target full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Discount, lively atmosphere, managing some interesting Team Members

    Cons

Retail working hours in general (but I will admit that one weekend on/off for management was nice), lack

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Innovate! Don't just dictate and spew the continual "best practice" BS. Promote those who are truly the best fit for the ETL/STL roles (and not those who have just been in the previous required roles for the required 18 months, etc.).
