I have been working at Target full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Great salary (I think the main reason those of us who have stayed longer than 1-2 years out of college are still around), good people overall to work with (management level), not sitting at a desk all day.

Cons

Hours, holidays, work every other weekend. The worst part though is the babysitting, and by that I mean the few team members who call in to work frequently, yet it's difficult to fire them. Also the "guests"... you will be yelled at, have to clean up someone's kid's poop (not kidding), so prepare yourself.

I have been working at Target full-time

    Pros

Has earned company reputation as a world class retailer. Consistently delivers bottom line results and has grown successfully in a highly competitive environment. Efficient, well managed, and has benefited from strong, stable leadership historically. Well organized around smartly defined policies, procedures, and best practices. Culture encourages and provides significant upward growth opportunities for those willing to sacrifice. Decent job and pay for ETL level and above.

    Cons

Many experienced STL's (store managers) will confide the best years for Target appear to have come and gone. The workload is manageable if you're strategic, have leadership skills and hardworking but can become extremely tough for stretches. Many struggle with work/life balance. The atmosphere and overall morale has declined over the last 5 years with a notable decrease the last 1-2 years. Leadership is currently preoccupied with Canada and ripple effects of the credit breach but there is confidence both will be corrected long term. The primary concern is getting the U.S. stores back on the right track. The new service initiatives are promising but nearly impossible to execute with the current lack of resources. HQ is asking far too much and the stores will not be able to differentiate the service experience without more to work with.

For those looking to join as an hourly team member or team leader there are limited circumstances to recommend Target as an employer right now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior leadership appears to be further and further disconnected from reality in the field. This sentiment is widely held, more so than ever before. EPS will eventually trump all at the expense of a carefully cultivated culture and retention of talented leaders. These are company hallmarks. Cutting stores payroll and front line supervisors has increased the workload significantly. Pushing expectations to new and even unrealistic levels has resulted in frustration not seen before. Target recruits well and employs many talented people but stores are becoming a much less attractive place to work. HQ and field leadership do not appear to grasp this quite yet but the very future of Target is at stake.
