I worked at Tata Consultancy Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    1. Good internal systems in place - lot of digitizaiton has happened in the company.
    2. Job security
    3. Work for TATA brand name
    4. Work load and leave mgmt depends on the project and project manager, company wise policies in these matters are not strictly enforced on all.
    5. Decent hikes - with the new system that enables year wise differentiation within the same grade.
    6.

    Cons

    1. Promotion policy is not based entirely on merit, except for A raters promitions cycles are way too long.
    2. Not much support from the company to junior level staff, only after Associate Consultant level (approx. 7 to 8 years of work ex) do they start to look for high performers.
    3. Retention policy non existent.
    4. Have decent employee engagement tactics in place but managers hardly use them until unless mandated by client.
    5. The difference in perks, salary hikes, promotion policies, apprisal policies depending on the client and the vertical. People with same ratings receive different salary hikes in different verticals and are subject to different promotion policies --- have seeen it but obviously is not the official policy.
    6. As TCS allocates freshers to a vertical and to technology - one has hardly control over point no. 5.
    7. Working hard on a bad project doesn't lead to release and better opportunities, it leads to being entrenched further in the bad project. I have suffered a lot because of this.
    8. No standarization of office support systems across locations. Some offices have hugh canteens and lounges for employees and some office you have to eat lunch standing up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Better promotion policy -- need to recognize young achievers instead of waiting for them to get promoted.
    2. Need to standardize office support services across different locations and across offices in one city. The employee doesn't get to choose his project for the most part and he/she shouldn't suffer because of it.
    3. Appraisal system should have majority component based purely on employee performance and one component on project performance. I have suffered many times even though i have done excellent work in my ratings because the deal that was signed didn't get us payment at that time. Or rather, the whole project was a loss making strategic decision - the fresher developer shouldn't suffer for it.
    4. Serious need for a rotation policy on onsite teams. I know people who have stayed onsite for 4.5 years of 5 years of their service at TCS and 11 years out of their 13 years service at TCS, while some good talent rots in domestic projects. Onsite is a major motivation tool and should be used a reward.
