I have been working at Taunton Press

Pros

Work/life balance is very good with normal hours, on-site restaurant and cool learning opportunities (classes in woodworking, cooking, marketing etc.). They pay well enough for the area. Taunton is doing decently in a tough industry/economy and, while not a household name, is respected in the publishing world for high quality products.

Cons

Not really in the NYC/lower faifield county orbit. Small company with many long-term employees makes for a close environment (maybe that's a plus for some?).

I worked at Taunton Press full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

A lot of lovely, hard-working, talented people work here. They're devoted to the work they do and really care about their customers. Nice location, nice benefits on the whole.

    Cons

Difficult transition from all-print to digital media--the company needs to take some calculated risks, perhaps seek out new audiences and customers. Marketing has never really had a plan. Since my association with the company, the staff's workload has doubled while pay raises were stopped completely. Almost impossible to get promoted on a regular basis, no matter how good your performance reviews are. There seems to be some covert sexism, in that male employees move up the ranks a little more quickly than women, and women are held to account more. A number of unanticipated lay-offs has left employees nervous about their prospects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust in your employees' creativity and vision; don't overwork them with drudgery--let them develop new and exciting products! Bring in more staff: the investment will pay off.

    Pros

Despite the awful time that the magazine industry has had since the recession, Taunton has managed to weather the storm better than others by continuing to produce quality products. Taunton values its customers, not just their money. This contributes to a generally positive work environment and attracts employees with talent and integrity.

    Cons

Since the recession, the workload has increased steadily, but salaries--already on the low side--have not.
