Former Employee - TFA Corps Member in Newark, NJ

I worked at Teach for America full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Closing the achievement gap is possible.

Cons

Not enough knowledgeable staff
Placement is schools with inexcusable working conditions with no support

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure MTLDs have experience in the classroom of 5+ years and are in your CMs classroom ALL THE TIME. Do not give MTLDs over 30 CMs each. They cannot successfully support that many.

I worked at Teach for America full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

As a core member, you have the opportunity to make a direct impact on the community and affect students' lives. You are "thrown to the sharks," but I know this experience made me confront my weaknesses and grow as a person while raising awareness of the education gap in America.

    Cons

Your experience and the challenges you face is largely dependent on the school where you are placed to teach - which you have very little control over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with core members more to ensure they have solid career options after the two-year commitment - begin working with first year core members so that they do not miss out on opportunities which require earlier action.
