I worked at Teach for America full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Great physical office space, access to lots of resources

Cons

Not uncommon to get a young manager who is still working to achieve their own success...

Advice to Management

Continue to work on retaining/ hiring staff over the age of 30 and staff of color.

    Pros

The leadership team and corps members are very passionate about their work and are very sympathetic and supportive when you encounter challenges.

    Cons

Teach for America ultimately has very little control over your job security and can do very little if you are placed at a school with a poor administration

I worked at Teach for America full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It is a non-profit with a very noble mission to end educational inequity. Great benefits package for full time employees. Overall, the challenges of the organization help you to grow as a professional in certain aspects, particularly in organization and attention to detail. Many quick growth opportunities within the company due to very quick company growth as TFA expands and because of the high turnover rates.

    Cons

This review is speaking directly to the organizations corporate aspect (and not the educational mission) While the challenges at the organization may help you grow as professional the types of issues you will encounter create an unsustainable working environment. -"work/llfe balance" is non existent (you are always expected to be "online" due to the "work from home culture") -turnover rate is unprecedented, not many junior staff members last more than 9 months (either transition positions in the company or leaving all together) -management style/employee development is very superficial

    Advice to Management

Very large disconnect between upper management and everyday employees which needs to be bridged. Very distinct differences in culture between the different departments at the organization which need to addressed and remedied. Applying mentorships and "real" management guidance rather than superficial "check ins" and employee micro managing will help to foster real leaders and not the Teach For America mold everyone is expected to be.
