    Corporate and compartmentalized

I have been working at Team Detroit

    Pros

Excellent client (Ford) is very supportive of agency, job security, coffeehouse and cafeteria on-site (people complain but they are ungrateful -- it is very convenient), exercise classes, Summer Fridays, on-site parking, pool tables, casual work environment, not very long hours for an ad agency.

    Cons

Horrendous cubes, overcrowded and loud, weak management, arrogant management (blatantly talk about getting massages, golfing, hitting the country club, etc. in front of those who are actually working), people who worked at various agencies before they merged as Team Detroit have an inordinate amount of PTO that they have no qualms about taking at the expense of their departments, colleagues and client, lots of overpaid, useless upper managers who do absolutely nothing but demoralize and play politics, politics trump talent, raises are given only when people threaten to leave and go to another agency and often eat up the budget so loyal employees are not rewarded, no women in creative leadership positions, no minorities in creative leadership positions, account people get treated much better than any other position, filthy bathrooms, well known that the only way to get a raise is to leave and come back, cannot express interest in transferring to another department without asking your manager (and thereby jeopardizing your existing job), if you do get to work in another group, HR will not give you a raise, they will insist it is a "lateral movement," HR plays favorites and is too friendly with some people leaving others to feel alienated, very corporate, no laughter, no fun, doesn't feel like working at an ad agency at all, little if any chance to work on integrated campaigns (e.g. if you work in digital, you'll never have the chance to do a TV spot -- ever).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get off your high horse and lead by example, recognize and reward the talent that is working so incredibly hard for you, stop bragging about how much money you make in front of others.

I have been working at Team Detroit

    Pros

    exceptional work/life balance
    great culture
    fun environment
    creative
very confident the company is headed in a positive direction

    Cons

HR is slow. The Career Track program is aimed to help in professional growth and development but it's pointless when management doesn't give it much of a priority. There aren't any checks and balances in place. If you are not happy with your job, by the time anyone notices chances are you'll be gone. Seems like the only way to move up in the company is leave for a better position and then come back with more negotiating power. Unbelievable how many people take this approach.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more proactive regarding the morale of your employees and know the success of your team is highly dependent on employee morale. If we are happy, it only makes you look better as a manager.
