I have been working at Technicolor

Pros

Grass Valley products are interesting. Work is challenging. Technology is exciting. Compensation is acceptable. Local management is excellent and I mean top notch. Engineering talent is most likely the best in the industry (most of them have been around since it started). The company (Grass Valley) is about to be divested of Thomson. This can only be a good thing.

Cons

Thomson has greatly suppressed the company's ability to innovate and be competitive. This has allowed Grass Valley's competitors to gain significant ground on all product fronts. There is major overhead in the cost structure due mainly to Thomson's attempt to buy multiple company's and force them to play nice together. Thomson care's nothing for it's employees. Engineering tools and equipment are underfunded.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the tough decisions. Stop trying to be sensitive to people's feelings. Make your decisions based purely on the data when deciding what product lines to maintain and where (location) to keep certain business operations. Some positions need to be removed and processes need to be simplified. Why in the **** do you still have two control systems?

I have been working at Technicolor

    Pros

Thomson is Salt Lake has dedicated, knowledgeable people. They are some of the best people that I have ever worked with. There is a good sense of camaraderie.

    Cons

Thomson as a parent company has not paid much attention to us; they don't seem interested in investing in our future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the future, not just this quarters returns. This isn't a high-growth business but can be profitable with a little attention.

I have been working at Technicolor

    Pros

Technicolor is among the best known companies in the entertainment industry, with over 90 years of history. Its a generally stable place to work, and the benefit package exceeds those found at many companies today. With facilities on nearly every continent on the globe, there's an incredible amount of cultural diversity within the company.

    Cons

Communication is poor. Senior management tends to keep changes quiet even after they've happened. Recent layoffs have not been discussed by managers unless directly asked by employees. Many things about the company are learned in the trade publications before they're announced by management, IF they're announced by management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management needs to be more forthcoming with changes in the company. Let the employees know what's really going on. They may be surprised by the loyalty of their employees.
