I have been working at Telcordia

Pros

Lots of autonomy, loose atmosphere, very smart people. A pleasant place to work as long as you can stay attached to interesting projects and are willing to put up with being significantly underpaid. The annual raises and bonuses are well below industry standards, despite repeated claims from senior management that they are "working on the problem". Employee morale is generally low and there are lots of personnel just waiting in the wings for their "magic date", when they can retire with a full pension.

Cons

Terrible compensation, limited opportunities for career advancement. Not clear if the business is sustainable in the long term.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay employees better, stop cutting benefits, and make sure the employees feel worthwhile.

I have been working at Telcordia

    Pros

Telcordia has a strong heritage and a world-class reputation for some of the most knowledge engineers and SMEs in the field of telecommunications.

    Cons

Compensation and benefits are being cut year over year, harming employee morale.
Rising costs of medical coverage is passed on to employees, eroding effective salaries.
Salary adjustments are not keeping up with yearly inflation, translating to effective pay cuts over the past 7-8 years -- with higher medical costs further compounding the problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Profits and employee morale are circular, you can't have one without the other.

Good company but facing lots of competition

    I worked at Telcordia

    Pros

The work is interesting and the people are generally very skilled and knowledgeable in their field. The compensation and benefits are good, but New Jersey is very expensive. Downsizing has resulted in a smaller group of people who must achieve a great deal, so even new employees are given lots of responsibility.

    Cons

Telcordia still relies on their previous role as in-house R&D for the regional Bell companies, even though those companies are, by and large, gone. For new customers, they must compete and their competitive position limits career advancement. Also, many of the current managers are hold-overs from the Bell System days. They have few contacts in the industry at large and are not plugged into networks that can held Telcordia succeed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make products competitive with best in class. Focus energy and resources on several products for new markets that can succeed on a broad basis, around the world.
