I have been working at Tellabs Operations full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Large corp. engineering lab tools and training. Diverse knowledge across eng. staff allows for good collaboration. Management generally supports time to design reliable products.

Cons

12 years of continuous downsizing prohibits job growth or moving around within company, raises/bonuses tied to corp. performance which has meant none.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate strategy tends toward chasing opportunities already at their peak rather then planning for long-term. Many projects started and then canceled due to missing market window. Hoping to see new managers brought in with fresh ideas.

    Pros

    Some good people remain, flexible working arrangements and the company competes in product areas that many global telecom providers continue to invest in. A good sense of camaraderie for those that remain. Benefits are reasonable.

    Cons

    Market share in key segments continues to erode. Company is very reactive and risk averse. No real longer term strategy or vision; the corporate strategy group has minimal influence at best. Ongoing announcements every 6-12 months about restructuring and head count reductions have created an environment of low morale where remaining employees continue to fear and expect the worst. Not sure, especially for companies that rely on rapid innovation to stay relevant, that there are many good examples of companies shrinking their way to prosperity. Not much excitement or confidence in the new CEO or the future. A difficult environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Identify a longer term strategy and commit - be bold! You have about exhausted all your credibility and your runway to drive real change gets shorter by the quarter. Stop tolerating non performance by the organization - expect and demand excellence and reward for it. Ongoing non performance is costing market share, revenues and the future! Absolutely need to think outside the box to motivate and retain key employees.
