Pros – Stable employment, actually diverse (real opportunities with fewer barriers based on race, gender, sexuality, national economic background, etc), mostly fantastic benefits for full-time employees (20 vacation days, 3 personal, plus a week winter break & 10 sick days - Blue Cross Personal Choice as an option for health insurance, 6 mostly-free credits per semester of courses (some charges apply), free tuition for employee's children, recognizes domestic partnerships, etc), plenty of opportunities for ambitious employees
Cons – Stable employment is undercut by instability in academic departments, diversity does not protect against cliques and pervasive internal politics, upper management is increasingly dominated by non-academics, upper level administrators administer things they don't understand, opportunities for ambitious or dedicated employees are created largely by the apathy or negligence of other employees
Advice to Senior Management – Try to tone down the business aspect of Temple and focus more on academics and community stability - and build a better meritocracy where experts in the later part of their careers are managing what they know, versus dedicated administrators managing things they know little to nothing about.
