Pros

Less stressful than my former "corporate" job. My co-workers are great. The benefits are really good. Schedules can be flexible on occasion if needed.

Cons

Salaries are not as high as the for profit world (but the benefits are outstanding). They charge employees to park in the university owned lots & garages.

    Pros

Benefits are very good and the jobs for the most part are secure once you have it. There is something of a family atmosphere university wide reflected in the significant numbers of long-time employees.

    Cons

Compensation is low as it's a non-profit organization. The opportunities for advancement are stifled once you leave the lower echelons due to the low turnover.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice if some overly rigid HR policies were relaxed a bit. Several -- like the inability to take more than six sick days a year even though we earn more than that -- seem to have been put in place in response to a few abusers. The way to handle the few abusers is to deal with them individually, not restrict the entire workforce. If it's a union contract thing, then fix it at the net negotiations.

  2. Great environment, not that much upward mobility

    Pros

Great pay. People are decent and easy to get along with

    Cons

A lot of the promotions are based on who you know rather than ability, in some departments.
