I have been working at Tenable Network Security full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

This is a great company with an amazing technology culture. Management from Executives to Directors are awesome individuals. The atmosphere is very casual and laid-back, more like a west coast startup environment. Benefits and training are great, and getting better as the company grows.

Cons

Tenable is a company of experts, so be prepared for expectations to be high. Sometimes office politics get strange and communication between functional groups can be terrible.

I worked at Tenable Network Security full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The software lineup is solid, with a great history behind the core technology of vulnerability analysis. If you're looking for a job with few challenges and like to keep a holiday calendar on your desk, this is the closest thing to government work you will find!

    Cons

Resources are misaligned. Some on the payroll are really just on the payroll, and criticism is not well received. Business development is more like business regression. R&D is stale. The sales department is modeled after the movie "Boiler Room." Engineering/Development management are not to be questioned.

Pay for the most critical positions is well below industry standards. There is also a culture of distrust from every angle.

And no free drinks and snacks!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think more before spending investor dollars. Be more open about product management decisions. Invest in areas that will keep you not only visible in the industry, but to be once again, an innovator. Stop paying people a salary and stock just so you can put their picture on the Web site - make them deliver.

I have been working at Tenable Network Security full-time

    Pros

Tenable is technically still a start-up, even though it now takes up the top three floors of a tower, and still aggressively hiring. The increasing staff size hasn't really impacted performance. Iif anything there's a palpable need for more talent.

The best thing about this company, from the perspective of a developer, is that work is scheduled for 8 hours a day, and you're not encouraged to take it home with you. The parking lot is nearly empty by 5:01pm. Almost everyone in the company don't have to worry about 2am texts, That's not to say that employees aren't engaged in their jobs, just that senior management has nurtured a culture that avoids "burnout".

While portions of the codebase date back more than a decade, modern tools and processes are used. Most of the company seems sensitive to falling behind on the tech curve and are will to try new approaches.

    Cons

If you're looking for hip start-up culture, look elsewhere. The walls here are beige. The sodas are in a vending machine, not freely available from the fridge.

There's also an odd stinginess with cheap things like office supplies and gear. Dry erase markers are a surprisingly valuable commodity.
