I have been working at Teradata full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Customers: without those, companies would never last. Deep pockets result: willing to invest in longer-term to deliver actual value. Ability to time-shift or telecommute since the company is widely distributed.

Cons

Far too many acronyms and old "processes" that just slow things down. Management then tends to just repeat buzzwords instead of being organized. Many employees do not speak English well.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

More people actually doing work instead of "product managers" "project managers" and "development realization team leaders" that just have meetings filled with empty slides.

I have been working at Teradata full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Free coffee and soda
    - Nice campus with walking path
    - Generally relaxed atmosphere
    - "Unlimited" sick time (it's complicated)
    - 401k matching and stock purchase plan are offered

    Cons

    - The company operates like a bunch of "separate fiefdoms".
    - Teams do not collaborate with each other.
    - The company runs on Excel and Oracle solutions internally - "islands of information" is an understatement.
    - IT controls the tools and is completely out of touch with current technology.
    - Promotions are non-existent.
    - Ambition is not recognized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Databases (hardware and software) are commodities these days. Transition to selling software licensing and services.

Don't ignore the potential of emerging technologies. When you decide to pursue one, don't waste resources creating smoke and mirrors product offerings around it.

Move the entire company off of Excel and Oracle solutions. Oracle is Teradata's biggest competitor, we should not be buying solutions from them. Excel is the devil, it leads to nothing but confusion and misinformation. Hire developers to make real tools.

The sole responsibility of an IT organization should be infrastructure. They should be responsible for keeping servers and desktops running and talking - that's it. Put the tools in the hands of in-house developers.

Promote collaboration through tools, events, meet-ups, hack-a-thons, etc. At least get the engineers talking to one another about what they are working on, challenging problems they have faced, solutions they've come up with, etc.

I worked at Teradata full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Some good technology, they're in a good space and leveraging their strengths in a very competitve arena.

    Cons

Very "box" centric, not solution centric. They always seem in a rush to close a big deal focused around the product, but not as focused on defining the overall solution to be delivered in conjunction with services. Services often takes a back seat to the sales team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Rein in the cowboys.
