Current Employee - Project Manager in Hartford, CT
Current Employee - Project Manager in Hartford, CT

I have been working at Terracon full-time (less than an year)

Pros

The stock plan seems to be really good and benefits seem to be ok. If you can get up into upper management you can have a real future here, I think.

Cons

Co-workers are not happy and always quitting, and the pay is horrible. Engineers are hired at $15.00 an hour. Upper management seems to busy putting out fires due to short staffing, and not focusing on the real problems, like hiring qualified staff, paying them accordingly and keeping them for the long term.

To much to list.

I have been working at Terracon full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Freedom when letting non-essential personnel go, competitive with similar firms, staff personnel treated appropriately most of the time.

    Cons

Hired some people with issues as support personnel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can and should compensate staff better then field personnel. Field personnel are (not to be rude, but it's true) expendable and shouldn't be compensated more then $12/hr. I'm not going to cut my bonus just to accommodate these people. The world needs ditch-diggers too.

Former Employee - Field Technician II in Wheat Ridge, CO
Former Employee - Field Technician II in Wheat Ridge, CO

I worked at Terracon full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good private stock, made a small fortune. Great employees, mostly the Field Technicians. Got to learn how to paint the office. Got to call the Jim Rome Show with a company cellphone. Good 401(k) plans available.

    Cons

Long work hours, and little respect for those who do the actual work. Top heavy management. Good Ol' boy network in full effect. Management is hypocritical, as they can't pass the Chauncy Test, but you will have to do so. Any questions regarding the Chauncy Test need to be directed to veteran technicians and to middle management department heads, as passing the Chauncy Test will be instrumental in your success as a technician. No room for advancement at all. Got old dealing with attorneys.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your attorneys. There are problems in the Wheat Ridge, Colorado office that revolve around middle management. Since the CEO of Terracon has been appraised of the issues in the Wheat Ridge office, then he is ultimately responsible, and has done a poor job in dealing with them. The CEO is aware of the personnel who are functionally illiterate in the Wheat Ridge office, and is also aware that they cannot pass the Chauncy Test. The fish rots from the head, and therefore since the problems with the Chauncy Test have been known for years, well, it has become a terrible place to work. One must pass the Chauncy Test in this industry. Enforce your Chauncy Test policies and make it known that middle management in the Wheat Ridge, Colorado office will have to pass this as well.
