I have been working at Texas Commission on Environmental Quality

Pros

Ample time off with holidays, vacation, and sick time. Pretty good training opportunities are provided to learn your job, great team approach to the work, at least in the regions.

Cons

Pay is not great, mid to upper level management are clueless as to the actual issues and lead with their stick and not integrity. Politics, politics, politics.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the way, get off of your high horse, and listen to employees.

I have been working at Texas Commission on Environmental Quality

    Pros

Opportunity to use technical training to protect human health and the environment and make a difference. Great place to learn how to implement the law, from a technical perspective. Work load is reasonable with little overtime, making it a good place for young parents to start their career. There are many good professionals and areas to work in.

    Cons

Bureacracy and politics (internal and external) interfers with technical decisions. Top-down management style. The good old boy network is alive and well. Promotions are not made upon merit but upon friendship and who will not question senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication needs to go both ways. Decisions should be made based upon the law and the advice of your technical staff - both what you want to hear and what you don't. Staff opinions should not be censored by management. Decision makers need to hear all sides, not just the predetermined answer.
