I have been working at Texas Department of Public Safety

    Pros

The people you work with are great and everyone has each others back because everyone is in the same boat. Holidays and time off are great and its really easy to get time off at the drop of a hat. They tend to work with people in terms of work hours for carpooling needs and so forth.

    Cons

Management must be one of the most incompetent I have ever seen. I seriously have no idea how some of these people are qualified or got hired for this positions other than through the "good ole boy" system. Way to much favoritism and rule bending for people. Raises are given secretely (no joke) to favorites while everyone else has to follow a "progression" based system outlined by the state. Money is wasted on so much pointless stuff, yet there is no money for "pay raises" (except of course for the favorites). Management never wants to deal with problems and there is a lot of mismanagement and misappropriation of stuff there. I think most people would be shocked to learn what is kept on people in databases and the justification they use for snooping in peoples lives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step down so that new people can be appointed.

Good place to get experience and have good benefits with the exception of retirement plan.

I worked at Texas Department of Public Safety

    Pros

Great place to get hands on experience with computer technology in a large enterprise environment. Good work / life balance.

    Cons

Very poor compensation... and the retirement plan is pathetic. Basically you are forced into paying a minimum of 3% into a 401(k) that does not match....you're not even given a choice...mandatory participation in a very poor investment...no interest / no matching...as a matter of fact, it's like negative cash flow since inflation will eat away at this stagnant savings account.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better pay / better retirement savings plan with choices.
