I worked at Texas National Guard part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

As a cadet, you get the inside scoop on the leadership, structure, and operations of a unit. Take advantage of your time and make the most of it in order to prepare for PL position.

    Cons

The SMP program for cadets needs more structure to it, yet cadets can take more initiative to be involved. Otherwise, the officers sometimes feel they are babysitting us.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the cadets more involved in your planning. Task them with OPORD's and review their work. If the commander is too busy, task the LT's to mentor the cadets.

I worked at Texas National Guard part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Weekend drill-pay helps. College money, just finished my B.A. on the GI Bill. If you choose the right MOS there is great potential for civilian employment in the same field.

    Cons

Can and most likely will get deployed, some times last minute notice. Promotions take awhile.
