Textron – “Trying to be better”
Pros
The company is currently working on turning itself around and making it a more employee oriented place to work. Corporate management has mad a clear effort to improve things at each of their bussiness units, and the changes have been slowly filtering down within each bussiness unit. The company tries to do a good job of informing its employees about the actions it is taking to imrpove the core bussiness through bi-monthly all-employee meeting. Managers meet with individuals throughout the year to develop goals and evaluate how they are progressing to meet those goals. The company is attempting to do the right thing.
Cons
Departments are very segregated and there are issues involved with cross group communication and sharing of information. In certain aspects the company can come off as very cheap and unappreciative to its employees. An example of this is the company christmas party which employees must pay in order to attend. Also, the amount of funding for employee activities provided for the bussiness unit is a very small fractional amount when compared to corporate spending on the same types of activities. The compensation system also leaves a little to be desired. Compared to industry the company pays less then a good chunk of its competitors.
Advice to Senior Management
Work on promoting and growing talent from within rather then trying to hire people that are not a good fit with the company to fill certain positions.
