A good, if sometimes frustrating place to work. You could do a lot worse.

I have been working at The Gap

Pros

Dynamic workplace with lots of energetic, talented people. High ethical standards. Gap is about as good a corporate citizen as there is out there. Talented individuals who are willing to conform to the company's culture have good possibility for advancement. Good benefits with an awesome vacation policy. The clothing discounts are nice--your closet will be overflowing within a couple of years. Obviously, attire is very casual. Seems like everyone here is in their 20s and 30s.

Cons

A little "too" PC, annual bonuses are a roll of the dice. Long hours and tons of meetings. The company hasn't been doing well, and retail is highly volatile so there are layoffs. Seems like everyone here is in their 20s and 30s.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

We work so hard to squeeze the last bit of margin out of mediocre product. Get some better product and everything else will come naturally.

Overall fun retail job, but be prepared to work to see rewards.

    I worked at The Gap

    Pros

Friendly employees, pleasant work atmosphere-while jamming to current music, excellent merchandise discount including sister brand stores: Old Navy & Banana Republic, good balance of work and life, on the job training with emphasis placed on customer service to all patrons, opportunities to learn new skills and grow.

    Cons

Store sales floor up-keep could falter and be messy especially during Christmas shopping season due to low hours available for payroll. Not the best job choice for anyone who cannot maintain store appearance standards (neat piles, items placed where they belong) and put things back and away for people trying items on in the dressing rooms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support stores with more hours for payroll especially during Christmas time. Stick and concentrate to delivering the basics to customers.

    I worked at The Gap

    Pros

Unlike employees at many other retail stores, persons working at the Gap will only have an on-call time at the end of regularly scheduled hours. Also, management is required to inform you of your on-call status well before you are scheduled to leave.

The Gap offers a great discount program that includes percentages off at Bannana Republic, Old Navy and Piperlime.Com. They also offer monthly coupons for employees to get new items for a very, very low pricce.

    Cons

The visual standards are very high, so if you don't like to be detailed this is not the store for you! The managers will not hold you over your regularly scheduled time, but they may ask if you can stay until the store has been perfected. If you are scheduled late at night or early in the morning, be prepared to do a lot of straightening and stocking!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Gap needs better overall training for it's managers. I had a great store experience because I had a great management team. I know of at least one other store where the employees, though well treated, are not as lucky as I was!
