I have been working at The Gap

Pros

Gap is an amazing company to work for. I have worked at Gap for 12 years and have had the opportunity to advance quickly. I have been able to relocate to other cities that I wanted to live in and I have worked with some of the smartest most highly skilled leaders in the retail business.

Cons

The expectations are very high and as a leader at Gap you must keep pace and find good balance in you leadership. You must drive solid results and lead and develop a strong team. This is difficult at times when business is tough.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the expectations high, those with the highest standards and want to work for Gap bad enough will rise up and deliver.

    I have been working at The Gap

    Pros

    * Fun culture
    * Products are accessbile - just go to the mall
    * Lots of vacation - 4 weeks to start (although now there is required PTO during the year)
    * Good work life balance in some areas
    * Big company, so lots of jobs posted at HQ
    * Good healthcare benefits
    * Casual atomosphere
    * Bonuses even in bad years

    Cons

    * No money for training, conferences, etc.
    * New hires making much more than loyal employees
    * Sometimes required to take PTO to help make numbers
    * No longer the home of the brightest and the best
    * Not results oriented, little accountability

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Too much redundancy at HQ - get leaner so that you can hire better people with the money you are saving. Stop thinking of everyone below the director level as disposable.

    Great place to work, hard business environment creates a lot of undue scrutiny at the individual contributor level

    I have been working at The Gap

    Pros

    * Work/Life Balance - generally good, unless management is making last minute decisions and creating rework
    * Good people development (if you seek it out, and your manager is supportive, and you have time, which is pretty much never these days)
    * People are generally friendly and non-comeptitive, easy to work in teams

    Cons

    * Top-down environment - decisions are made at a very high level and passed down with no warning, and little bottoms-up input is really considered. The rework from these decisions is often substantial.
    * Leadership too involved in the details
    * Little whitespace to pursue process improvement and internal entrepreneurial projects
    * Very flat organization, reduces promotion and advancement opportunity
    * Morale is poor these days - management seems to be betting on culture change through losing the people who knew how much better it was before, instead of by really affecting the culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * Create whitespace - your employees have tons of ideas but no time to pursue them
    * Empower your people - Create a culture where decisions are pushed down to the lowest level possible
    * Stick to decisions - the excuse that "this is retail" is too often used to cover up bad decision making.
    * Glenn Murphy is doing an awesome job, he just needs to ensure that his brand teams are given the resources and strong leadership to succeed.
