    I worked at The Gap

    Pros

    You can get good professional experience here; it's a huge company and you can move around and gain valuable experience.

    Cons

    Don't waste your time trying to chase a promotion unless you have it in you to suck up to the boss; only sycophants move up here, no matter your qualifications. Work/life balance is bad, even though they claim the opposite. Don't wait around for things to turn around; sales have been dropping like a rock for a decade and there's no end in sight. Once someone makes manager he/she is "made"; they don't have to work as hard as everyone else or even know what they're doing, which means you may have to spend extra time figuring out how to do your job, with no support.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Knock off the rah-rah sessions and be real with your employees.

    I have been working at The Gap

    Pros

    * Fun culture
    * Products are accessbile - just go to the mall
    * Lots of vacation - 4 weeks to start (although now there is required PTO during the year)
    * Good work life balance in some areas
    * Big company, so lots of jobs posted at HQ
    * Good healthcare benefits
    * Casual atomosphere
    * Bonuses even in bad years

    Cons

    * No money for training, conferences, etc.
    * New hires making much more than loyal employees
    * Sometimes required to take PTO to help make numbers
    * No longer the home of the brightest and the best
    * Not results oriented, little accountability

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Too much redundancy at HQ - get leaner so that you can hire better people with the money you are saving. Stop thinking of everyone below the director level as disposable.

    No opinion of CEO
