The Hartford – “Nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to stay there.”

Pros

They have flexible schedules and there is no expectation to work late and put in long hours. In fact, they push you out the door at the end of your shift to avoid paying overtime. Managers are nice and there is a sense of community. The facilities are also nice. The cafeteria is a big plus and the food service company is good.

Cons

Salaries are far below what competitors offer. Some departments have very poor training. In fact, they pretty much throw you into the job and let you figure it out as you go. Coworker competence is low. Work is stressful and there's plenty of it. There is not much opportunity to exercise independent judgement.

Advice to Senior Management

Develop a training program and attract better applicants by raising salaires.
