I have been working at The Home Depot part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The pay is better than most places, the employees are like a family and you can learn a lot of new skills

Cons

They are very unorganized on the upper tiers of management, they listen to the employees butt raerly make the changes needed to make it run smoother, they put in the departments that you know the least about.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

You will never get bored at the Home Depot. If you want to progress you can, hustle and learn all that you can. They seem to always be willing to rotate people around the store to round out their experience.

    Cons

FAST (Forecasting and Scheduling Tool) is the computer program that THD uses to create the hourly schedule. The problem is that it is based on forecasted sales and not the customer needs. Frequently departments will be scheduled for hours with ZERO coverage. This of course effects the customer service, department staffing and general moral. It is up to the store's ASDS and the managers to help balance the schedule if adjustments need to be made. Unfortunately since some many of the store personnel have simply moved up the ranks by being able to hustle, they lack the foresight to be able to plan ahead and provide distribution support for the store. Never mind the whole inconsistency of coverage because the computer auto creates, you might close one night and have to open the next day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

FAST is a tool, not the law. Learn to balance the true cost of staffing verse service. If you are going to be number 1 in customer service; you have to have the staff in place to provide service, safe environment, and in stock. The lack of staffing negates all 3 of these goals. For a company that averages 7-8% labor cost, cutting 700 hrs to save $10500 dollars actually hurts you in the long term for the lack of staff is a lack of sales.
