I have been working at The Institute of Cancer Research

Pros

Some of the labs are world-renowned, with excellent reputation. As an institution, it is attractive in that it spans all facets of cancer research and drug development from basic R&D, to development, to drug screening to clinical trials.

Cons

Not all of the staff or researchers are highly motivated or talented. Although the location is quite good in central London or Sutton.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would advise management to always be sure to contribute to professional developement of employees, although there is some of that in place, including training and coursework.

I worked at The Institute of Cancer Research full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A very well connected research institution that performs very well in attracting funding and training staff. Remarkably well positioned to interact with the clinic via partnership with the Royal Marsden Hospital.

    Cons

Tending toward translational projects, possibly at the cost of basic research.
The Institute is split between two sites, which can present frustration for collaborative activities between teams.

  2. Very dependent on what lab you work in

I have been working at The Institute of Cancer Research full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The culture at the ICR is very informal, and if you work for the right person, it could be a good place to work. Annual leave entitlements are generous. The name recognition of the Institute should increase in future, making it a more prestigious place to work.

    Cons

The leadership is lacking, although this is also dependent on what lab you work in. There's a sense that team leaders can and will say anything they want to, and there seems to be little protection for employees and students again discrimination and bullying, despite the Institute's on-paper commitment to tackling these issues. Of course, the compensation is also poor, with the idea that since you do cancer research you must not need money to live on in London.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the people who do the actual day-to-day work that gets you published. People want to succeed, but if you make it difficult for them with a poisonous atmosphere and little focus on the actual science, they will leave and your funding will be hard to renew.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
