Good mission and vision - too many egos and non-accountability at leadership level

    Pros

Hard working staff - committed despite challenges
Still cash cow - plenty of working capital
Lots of health care expertise throughout the organization

    Cons

    Lots of inefficiency
Big divide in comp between staff and execs
Unhappy execs stay because golden packages too good to leave
Joint Commission brand is less and less relevant in health care circles
Board - little power to change or drive accountability

    Pros

High prestige level in brand name - company has a great deal of (fear driven) credibility in the healthcare arena. They are the "gold seal" standard for healthcare accreditation.
As an employee, they have an excellent benefits package. They actually offer a pension in addition to 401K matching, which is almost unheard of anymore.

    Cons

Organizational culture is terrible. Significant "cloak and dagger" type practices in how management handles staffing issues with shocking hires, fires and promotions that do not create a stable and happy workforce.
There is huge favoritism for some employees and painful treatment for newbies or people who don't play the game according to unwritten tribal rules. It can be a very difficult culture for a new employee.
The weirdest thing is they have a culture that seems to fear change, progress and success. If you have new ideas or better ways of doing things, be careful how and to whom you make these ideas known. Go-getters are labeled "difficult to work with" and praise for successful projects or work is only given to a team leader, never the individual who made it happen.

    Advice to Management

Take a good hard look at your "Board Room" mentality. (The Joint Commission has a gigantic and oppressive board room which does nothing to create a sense of working togehter.) Only certain people are invited to the table, and only if they have a name placard in place. Everyone else is held in silence in the gallery and allowed to observe, but not participate. You are missing a major opportunity to move the organization into the 21st century by only listening to those you invite to speak.
