Salary is satisfactory, but bonuses are quite low.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The employee review process could use work. Young professionals may not know what is available to them. Management should work with employees to find out what they ultimately want from their career and the review process should help them get there

I have been working at The Kleinfelder Group

    Pros

It's a healthy mid-size company, with decent benefits and a good work environment. Intra-office and inter-office cooperation is encouraged and recipricated. The company is growing despite a faltering economy. THe annual company sponsured technical seminar facilitates the exchange of ideas between offices within the company.

    Cons

The managers use regulations to take advantage of employees sometimes. Salaried employees are often expected to work 60-hour weeks with no compensation. Billability is stressed to the point of absurdity. And this leads to a significant loss of employee morale and employee loyalty. Some managers have missed the boat on keeping up with the newest industry technologies and actively discourage the professional growth or opinions of young employees.

I have been working at The Kleinfelder Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It's generally a good place to work. There is a wide variety of work opportunities and a fair potential to advance. Upper management seems to have the company on the right financial track. Very little internal politics and a general sense that everyone is pulling together. Good benefits and transparent financials.

    Cons

Dealing with the bureacracy and navigating through the multiple layers of enterprise architecture. For example, the behavioral 'safety system' requires a slavish, brainwashed, zombie-like adherence to dogma. It borders on messianic/creepy and is viewed as childish and belittling by more than a few staff. There are also client-centric subcultures within the company that can have dramatically different approaches to work/life balance. Hubris and and a callous, misguided elitism are endemic in these pockets - Pride cometh before the fall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue making bold decisions while considering that less is often more when it comes to bureacracy. Empower the right people with the freedom to be creative and thereby generate the organic growth desired. Roll back portions of the stifling behavior modification system. Acknowledge that yes we're good, but we can learn from our competitors. Confidence leavened with humility will allow us to adapt and adopt in a challenging business environment.
