Pros

MARS is fully focused on shopper marketing. If you're passionate about the shopper & retail, then this is a great place to be. Because of its focus, the company is "in tune" with the marketplace and is very fast to adapt to change. The company values ideas and entrepreneurial thinking and has a warm, "family" feel to it.

Cons

If you have a hard time working in an environment where change happens, then this is probably not going to be the place for you.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Always keep the shopper at the center even as you expand into new services. It's your strength.

    Pros

Work-life balance is a huge plus. However, part of the reason is because everyone does the status quo. with no desire or passion. This is NOT a face paced environment. 8:30-5. Attendance is checked. Only small handful of people have laptops, so they do not work from home. Even small number of people have cell phone stipend (which is horrible) so they don't even check email.

    Cons

There are so many cons, but for starters here are a few
1- Office is run by a CEO who will literally scream obscenities and threaten to fire people at a moment's notice over trivial things (ie, wrong paint color on the walls, cart not clean enough when serving food, phone conference number not working)
2- No process. Client service teams are trained to be task-takers. Little to no mentorship or grooming.
3- Constant change. From changing conference room names (4 times in three years) to constant revolving door of digital team to process changes non-stop. Leadership does not know how to land the plane and get everyone to rally around effectively.
4- Employee Relations Charade. Recently had an overhaul in building to "make it look it is more creative." Change was due to clients coming in. Fake meetings were put in place to look like space was utilized and people were collaborative. Project mangers were asked to update the project management system so that clients would think the agency was "hustling and bustling." Employees were bribed with an extra day off to vote for clients and Mars in the HUB Magazine (only good news is that it resulted in an extra vacation)
5- Uninspiring creative work. In-store shelf strips, tearpads, FSI, and end caps and sometimes banner ads on retailer websites.
6- Retention is a joke. The people that have longevity are upper management. Middle management and below are a constant revolving door.

I have been working at The Mars Agency full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The entrepreneurial culture means that if you have an idea, you get to try it out. The relatively small size means you get to do meaningful work where you can see the connection to the overall goals of the company, and you have continuous exposure to top leaders. The company is a leader in Shopper Marketing; no better place to learn or hone those skills.

    Cons

There is not a lot of structure for training and career development -- you have to be assertive about setting and achieving your goals, but the rewards are there when you are willing to do that work. Salaries, benefits, and time off are on the low side, but still competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to look for ways to attract top talent -- through competitive salaries and benefits and by increasing opportunities for career planning and development.
