I worked at The North Face full-time (less than an year)

Pros

The benefits at North Face are extremely generous for a retail company. They offer time off, health care, and great discounts on their products. The company also has a fun-loving sporty culture that includes a constant focus on environmental sustainability and volunteerism.

Cons

The hours can be extremely long, the product is extremely popular which makes the job more stressful than other ones in retail. Reliance on performance based metrics leads to increased stress. Corporate from San Leandro will frequently come into the store with their friends and abuse their employee discount privileges. Company politics exists; pay is mediocre and upward movement is extremely difficult.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open to promoting from within. Nobody knows/can improve your product more than those who work in sales. Increase pay.

I have been working at The North Face full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Beautiful new LEED certified building with bay view, company cafe, gym, opportunities to participate in product wear-testing trips with sponsored athletes, sustainability agenda. Annual review process with professional development workshops with up to 5% personal salary increases and up to 6% company bonus, medical, dental, vision benefits, 401K, and matching funds, relaxed dress code and diverse culture, creative and active coworkers, advantages of working with large company in terms of privileges and access to commercialization materials and factories. Travel with good accommodations. Opportunity to move to other brands under VF umbrella., wholesale purchase promotive, company sponsored community service days, many other hidden benefits such as transition counseling, disability, ergonomic evaluations, perks for commuters, and visiting speaker series, flex day program; in other words more benefits than one can possibly take advantage unless they work less than 8 hours a day! Good to better working conditions/hours compliance agenda with our factory partners.

    Cons

The PLM system used by RDD is a bear, and was downloaded before being fully spot tested with key employees. Bonuses weigh less on personal success than overall company success. Although its easier to start with less experience and move up to mid-level positions, its getting harder to move from mid-level up. Company culture favors designers over product developers. Product development calendar is a little backwards: sketches and prototyping come before materials are completely commercialized. Product developers are often overworked depending on manager. Flexible working hours and ability to work from home are extremely variable depending on manager. New building has some unfortunate oversights in space management, resulting in crowding and excessive noise, resulting in necessity for earphones when working. Not so good RDD working/hours compliance agenda.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Foster more care in work/life balance for RDD associates. Develop more trust with employees with regards to working from home. Provide more professional development for managers.
