I worked at The Tile Shop, Inc. full-time

Pros

Basically money is the best thing about this job. When sales are good you can make a lot of money, however, slower months are impossible to survive. If you are a hard worker and a good seller than you can move up the corporate ladder.

Cons

You work at least 45-50hrs a week - 6 days a week.
The job is physically demanding. No one buys just one bag of thinset or mud for a project, so if you are loading up a customer you wind up lifting an average of 200lbs of setting materials alone.
While they promote from within, if you don't want to manage a store there is no other options for good employees.
Because the salary is 100% commission based, you need to constantly watch co-workers and your own assistant manager and manager sales numbers to make sure they are not stealing sales. There is definitely a cutthroat attitude that is not for the feint of heart.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Excellent sales don't necessarily make for good managers.
Better training for employees and managers - the sink or swim mentality worked before they went public but now that you are trying to build a national brand there needs to be consistency.

I have been working at The Tile Shop, Inc. (less than an year)

    Pros

Its indoors and there's a restroom

    Cons

This bunch expects minimum 53 hour week at barely legal pay scale ( more time is expected at the end of the pay period). Expected duties include driving forklift (without certification or training) , and extremely heavy lifting... There's frequently no warehouse man on duty. Sales methods are akin to used car sales... Push em out with whatever's available and load on every possible option. The company's "subsidy" program is in reality just indentured servitude.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees... They work very, very hard.

Long hours always back tracking orders and quotes to make sure no one is stealing your sale.

I have been working at The Tile Shop, Inc.

    Pros

If you can have repeat contractors come to you can make decent money.

    Cons

Your always watching your back worrying that another sales rep including assistant manager will steal your clients when your not around or take a percentage of your sales because they added a couple of items to your quote. Some sales Reps will go around and hide a sale that you worked on and put it in another name so you end up with nothing. The sales quota is stupid its based on gross profit and works out to a 10 to 1 margin ie you get a grand for every 10,000.00 in profit you sell not gross. The new sales Reps work hard selling, pulling orders, answering phones and cleaning etc . The old Reps have repeat contractors so they meet there quotas pretty easy they don't work as hard as the new reps. If you dont make draw a couple of times or have enough in open orders you gone. Large turn over rate!
