I have been working at The Zappos Family full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    -Friendly co-workers
    -Good work environment
-Freedom to move fast without fear of punishment from breaking things

    Cons

-General lack of focus on running the business; everything has become about improving downtown which has been a tremendous distraction and makes little business sense (I know pitch -- create a downtown tech community and be able to hire from that talent pool -- but it's all cover for the fact that Tony is over Zappos) . I can't believe that Amazon is OK with this.
-Tony, Zappos CEO, has stated publicly that he spends "100% of his time on Downtown Project."
-Lower-than-average compensation due to no e-commerce competition in the area.
-Reduced health benefits over the past year (you don't need to pass increased costs onto your employees just like you don't have to pass on fluctuations in UPS shipping prices onto your customers).
-Spin factor: the company has become fond of sugar coating everything instead of communicating with us like adults (see health benefits, downtown project, tech projects).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    -Put company first, community second.
-Hire a CEO that focuses on Zappos, not downtown Las Vegas.
-Hire a CFO and COO while you're at it.

I have been working at The Zappos Family as an intern

    Pros

The company strives to provide the best customer service, with that everybody is a customer, even you as an employee. People overall is nice and friendly, you don't need to know them or work on the same department for people to start a conversation with you, which is great. A sense of community surrounds the office building. Lots of free food, yeah you will gain weight.

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive, they sell it as a tradeoff for how many parties, dinners and other perks the company has to offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

On the tech side, salaries need to be reviewed. There is a lack of resources for tech people and even more so in Las Vegas. You might be loosing great people because of this. At the end of the day people need to be rewarded according to their value. Dinners and team outings cannot substitute the income people use for their retirement or kid's education.
