Like any company, there are dysfunctional parts and less dysfunctional parts: choose carefully

Manager (Current Employee)
Eagan, MN

ProsWork life balance. Flextime, and no expectation that "the best work takes place after five pm" like there is a lot of places. Quite a few people, even in senior management, come in early and leave early without it being a career limiting move. The technology organization is especially competent, and anyone with a good idea that can define the good idea in terms that the technology folks can understand is treated with respect and sometimes even adulation. The strategic marketing services organization is bright, strategic, analytical, and continues to be on the cutting edge. The content operations group and the content technology group are competent professionals led by competent professionals.

ConsThe segment marketing organization is a living embodiment of the Peter principle, with too many chiefs and not enough worker bees. They spend lots of money on themselves, promote only from within, and make life miserable for the rest of the company. There are good people in the organization, but they're drowned out by the idiots in charge and the high number of layers of management that insulate senior leadership from good ideas. New Product Development is OK, but too product-focused and not good listeners to the strategy folks (although they are correct in ignoring the segment marketers). The sales organization is focused on their numbers, and when they're not hitting them, they whine a lot.

Advice to Senior ManagementBlow up segment marketing, especially on the law firm side. Cut the number of directors and senior directors by two thirds, but keep the head count for marketers who have direct marketing and channel management experience (as opposed to lawyers from the customer experience operations organization). Beef up technology infrastructure, start by identifying technology bottlenecks (like the data warehouse) and investing in them rather than viewing infrastructure as a mere cost center.

Pros: The free coffee in the C building is pretty good. Cons: Management cares only about the appearance of things and not for real suggestions for improving processes. Promotions and advancement are not based on ability… Advice to Senior Management: Cull the herd of numerous middle managers that contribute nothing to the company other than filling chairs… No, I would not recommend this company to a friend More

I have been working at Thomson West

Pros: Great benefits, good work / life balance, career growth potential, healthy work environment, great office options including company store, Carabou Coffee, free fruit and milk.… Cons: Too much corporate politics (which you'd get anywhere, though), turnover is high… Advice to Senior Management: More communication to middle management and all employees, working at… More
