I worked at Thorlabs full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people are enjoyable to work with.

The company is trying to progress.

    Constantly growing.

    Great access to management.

    Cons

The company is run by scientists that too often "recreate the wheel" rather than going with industry best practices or bringing in an expert.

Owner micromanages rather than letting employees take ownership of their work, which I believe would lead to better results. The company says its focus is the customer, but the "customer" usually just means the owner.

Low wages, sub-par benefits, difficult to advance (flat structure). Little visibility related to this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give employees more freedom. First I mean this in terms of allowing employees to take "ownership" of their portion of the company. Second in terms of the company structure- hours are very rigid, which makes working there a headache.

Focus more on employee development. Management needs to know how to be more supportive of employees, which will have a huge morale impact and spur better performance. Employees need to receive regular training- this will help them perform their work better and show them the company is committed to their growth.
