I have been working at Thresholds full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Great vision and commitment to people with mental illness and homelessness. Excellent affordable benefits package.

Cons

Poor supervision. Poor guidance. Workers don't feel appreciated and are overworked. Pay is not commesurate with heavy caseloads and tons of documentation and working after hours. If you are a hard worker you will get a cost of living raise. If you are a lazy do nothing worker, you will also get the same cost of living raise and you get to stay employed ,regardless. Advancement means little but it works if you know someone in the upper echelon and they helped you get there. (Thats' where the real pay is). Promotions are not always performance-based.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find out what a typical day is really like for line staff and middle management. Make sure you are soliciting input from these workers and hearing it. Break up the enclaves/cliques. Make certain that line staff get adequate support and supervision and that folks are getting promoted because they can do the job.

Extremely tough and personally rewarding but not valued at all by company.

    Pros

You have the opportunity to make valuable, measurable, and lasting impressions on people that are in desperate need of help.

    Cons

Pay is horrible. Expectations are not realistic. Company is top heavy with management who are paid a decent wage. Most all line jobs require a car with 100/300/100 full coverage insurance and there is no compensation for that. Never any compensation for overtime.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the line staff a true and measurable say at the table with issues that effect them. Don't say you care, show that you care.

Depends on the specific program you work for!

I worked at Thresholds full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Overall, the organization does a lot of good for a lot of under served people. The work can be very fufilling.

    Cons

There are drastic differences in quality of work environment and supervisors between programs. The pay isn't great and there is a lot of tedious paperwork (Medicaid), but this is status quo for social services organizations.
