I worked at Time Out New York full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Magazine content is great, editorial and art staff are young, hip and interesting mix of culture that creates a stimulating and ever-changing environment to work in. The best team I've ever worked with.

    Cons

As a dying publication, Time Out cuts budgets and costs by firing employees and overloading current staff. Horrible work-life balance as existing staffers are made to cover multiple roles without ever receiving a pay increase or promotion for their hard work. Extremely poor top-down management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your people. Understand the talent and hard work that goes in to producing the weekly magazines, guides and websites. Pay staffers what they are worth and ensure they have adequate staff to cover all the work so that there is time for creativity to flourish. Abolish the rampant "title-only" promotions- titles do not pay the bills and certainly contribute to an employee's low feeling of self-worth when they are doing five people's jobs for an entry level wage.

    Pros

    Tight-knit team, good communication, openness
Everyone feels like a friend, not just a colleague and everyone is easy to talk to. Article ideas get bounced around and people are always willing to help out with input, contacts, you name it. Radical opinions are encouraged. A bad cover-story can be refuted as easy as "That's a bad idea. I don't think we should do that. How about we do X instead?". The Editor-in-chief listens.

    Cons

    Inefficient deadlines, work piling, scapegoating

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to split up deadlines over the week to avoid last-day crowding.
