Worked there during a period of tremendous growth and change, which was both challenging and frustrating.

I have been working at Topco Associates

Pros

The member/owner customers are great, with tremendous diversity in geography, size and format.
This diversity presents a great opportunity to see many different aspects of the grocery industry, and is a great experience whether you choose to maintain a career there or eventually move on. The members really need what Topco has to offer them, and are unbelievable willing to work with Topco, so there is an opportunity for tremendous job satisfaction.

Cons

The organization's business model is extremely complex with multiple programs, (perishables, grocery, pharmacy etc.) interacting with many members. In order to address this complexity, they have developed separate functions for purchasing, programs, account management and now member services. Exactly how each of these groups should interact with members, suppliers, brokers etc. was never all that well defined, creating opportunities for mis-communication, overlaps and service gaps.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The former president was extremely conservative in his interactions with the employees, and I believe had a blind shot relative to many of these issues. I encourage the new administration to encourage more of a free flow of ideas, concerns etc. I believe that this approach will make for a more effective and efficient organization and a much better place to work.

Financially secure but not a place for an innovative career

I have been working at Topco Associates

    Pros

Continued year of year sales growth. Financially secure.
Great place to work during a recession.
    Summer Hours
Company wants associates to be users of the products they procure. They put in a company store and sell at just over cost; occasionally pass out samples.
If you are driven and have an idea, you can make it happen...just prepare to do it all by yourself.

    Cons

Top management and majority of VP levels will only communicate with direct reports and information has to flow through levels.
    Company has no vision.
Upper management lacks direction and middle management are left guessing and working toward independent goals as opposed a cohesive one.
Departments who should be working together are given different objectives making it difficult for people to work well together or achieve their goals.
Extremely lean staff in most areas overwork select individuals forcing the best people to put out fires all day instead of being strategic.
Entry level positions are boring, lack incentive, and turn over too quickly.
Many new managers lack understanding of the complicated business of Topco and the company went from slow to almost a complete stop.
'New ideas' have added time consuming processes and management refuses to see the need to increase resources to complete tasks. Longer term employees continue to pick up slack.
New management see longer term employees as liabilities vs. assets.
    Low pay and worse raises
Building is awful, heat/air seem to always be failing somewhere in the building. Location is industrial and difficult to get to for most areas of Chicago.
Many associates work with no privacy and low cube walls. Noise can be an issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to take the time to engage with all departments in groups of similarly ranked associates. You need to hear from ALL your employees without their managers present. Get their ideas, thoughts and grievances before you go forward with the "post-Lauer" years or bring in a third party and have them consolidate the feelings of the employees.
Align departmental objectives to work together.
Invest in systems and current employees. Fix before the economy recovers or you will loose many people.
Fix your new managers with the attitude that they were brought in to 'fix' Topco. Topco wasn't broken, it just needs to move forward (as in all companies). This is driving a wedge in your organization.
