Toyota – “Still has a great reputation for autos and employment

Apr 17, 2009

Toyota Anonymous in Torrance, CA:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

Even though car sales are down in 2008 - 2009 at Toyota as well as the rest of the ailing auto industry, Toyota continues to carry a sterling reputation both inside and outside of the auto industry. The company brings its best-in-class operational practices into all aspects of the company. Every employee is expected to contribute to cutting waste and streamlining operations, so employee input is not only accepted, it is strongly encouraged.

Cons

On such a huge work site as the one in Torrance it is difficult to exchange knowledge and information with colleagues in other divisions. While working with research studies,I have noticed on ocassion that two different business units had both commissioned similar research studies. It was difficult to know which one to base further work on, especially when the studies may have conflicting conclusions. This would be a great opportunity Toyota to cut waste--something they love to do anyway.

Advice to Senior Management

I would advise Senior managment to increase the size and quality of the Strategy function. As of now, it doesn't seem that they have the resources to focus on all the important questions.
