I worked at Tufts University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and you can't beat the opportunity to take classes for free.

    Cons

There aren't any opportunities for growth and management overloads employees to the point of exhaustion at times. I can't speak on the entire University, but within my department, there is a reluctance to promote even the exemplary employees, and the employees end up leaving for other companies where they are appreciated and paid more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do better by your staff so they are more likely to stay.

I have been working at Tufts University full-time

    Pros

    - smart, motivated students
    - nice campus
    - mission to provide excellent education and conduct high-level research

    Cons

    - too many administrative forms to sign for students and professors
    - IT systems are improving, but still need more
    - benefits (health, dental, etc.) should be re-negotiated; they are still expensive for employees and don't provide enough out-of-network coverage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - streamline and focus on teaching and research; everything else (meetings, ad hoc initiatives) should be minimized
