Former Employee - Area Field Manager in Houston, TX
Former Employee - Area Field Manager in Houston, TX

I worked at U-Haul full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Field support was ok. The dealer's within the route for the most part were an extended family, and the company benefits were good.

Cons

Local management constantly pulled you off of what you were doing to address something that could have waited which simply created more work. Long hours for little pay

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Markeing Company Presidents have to much freedom to add to the Area Field Manager's or General Manager's work, which is in direct contrast to company policy. Usually at the request of their supervisor or Area District Vice President. The quality of the work done is poor and simply has a trickle down effect to customers, and company employees.

I have been working at U-Haul full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    #1 Benefits are excellent
    #2 Immediate management is super
#3 Recognition for accomplishments and support for advancement

    Cons

    Scheduled nights, weekends, holidays
    #1 Job description highly inaccurate
#2 We deal with a very difficult customer base, as they are almost always in a "stressed-out, ready to explode" mood b/c they just had a horrendous move they completed (one of the major life stressors). Customer Service is extremely difficult.
#3 No training and most employees are Part Time (as required by U-haul) so there is large turn-over and no real loyalty to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training, training, training...in a uniformed, organized method (possibly should have a position that goes to several locations and focuses only on training).

    Pros

The ability to help people relocate was a great aspect of the job. The teamwork between all the locations was a great thing.

    Cons

The long hours were a very hard thing to deal with along with all of the changes in management made it difficult to stay.
