I have been working at U.S. Government Accountability Office full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Flexible work schedule, which makes it family friendly. Depending on the team you're on, you may work on one project for up to about a year or on several at once. Work you are doing is for Congress and sometimes leads to saving the government money, testimonies, and news media attention.

Cons

Antiquated IT systems and equipment, but some of it was postponed to avoid furloughs and/or RIFs. Hiring and COLA has been non-existent for the past few years. Hard to be promoted after the first promotion level (2A).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more attentive to the "retired on active duty" types, because the younger workers get discouraged. Like that you put employees first in tight budgetary times.

    Pros

    Variety of work topics
    Flexible schedule

    Cons

Treat Ph.D.s like everyone else, i.e., don't seem to value a Ph.D.'s expertise.

I have been working at U.S. Government Accountability Office full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting topics to work on, work/ife balance, co-workers are pleasant, good travel if you're on the right team, good benefits.

    Cons

Tedious at times, if you are on a bad team you're going to have a long 9-18 months finishing a project, too much structure at times which inhibits creativity, many layers of review, and little control over your own work, and limited promotion opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shorten engagements, not every engagement needs to be 9 months or longer. Become more efficient in the way we conduct out work.
