I have been working at U.S. Office of Personnel Management

    Pros

Excellent job security and benefits package (for employees with at least part-time status)
Flexibile work hours include the ability to accept or reject assignments

    Cons

Low federal pay band (GS04). This position normally requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and undervalues this position. As a result, there is a lot of turnover. The options for promotion within OPM are limited or non-existent unless the incumbent is a military veteran (which is NOT one of the key success attributes of the position).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The pay band for this position should reflect the responsibilities of the job, including the handling, storage, and use of controlled test materials.

I worked at U.S. Office of Personnel Management

    Pros

The benefits are unexcelled. The work is meaningful. The pay is fair and rises with inflation. Jobs tend to be more secure than those in the private sector.

    Cons

Not everyone pulls their weight in terms of work. There are lots of rules and regulations, some of which hamper the ability to perform at a maximum level. A cynical public distrusts government no matter what it does.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember why you came to Washington. Lead and don't be led by it. Don't be afraid to rock the boat if that's what it takes to unleash reform.
