Current Employee - Associate in New York, NY

I have been working at UBS full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - The firm is clearly taking the right steps to reposition itself as a premier global wealth/asset manager
    - Unwinding capital intensive positions in the Investment Bank is of utmost importance
    - Streamlining of middle and back office support is key to lower expenses
    - Good people, although the firm should take advantage of the buyers market in terms of talent and acquire leading people via competitive compensation.

    Cons

    - Huge, bureaucratic institution
    - Everything passes through Switzerland
    - Slow moving, reactionary

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation matters very much. You will not move on and repair the firm if you have high turnover as a result of uncompetitive compensation packages.

    Recommends
    Positive Outlook
    Approves of CEO

Former Employee - Analyst in New York, NY

I worked at UBS full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Satisfied with compensation* (Please note that I am generally not too hard to please--esp given that many peers in my age group were out of work)
    - Excellent benefits package
    - Excellent cafeteria food
    - Dinners ordered after 6PM were paid for by the firm (up to $25 dollars)
    - Worked in a group with some generally good people (DEF not the norm; group specific)
    - Worked in a group where weekend work was not always required (DEF not the norm; group specific)

    Cons

    - Consistently long work days (12hrs+; on par with investment banking hours)
    - Managers' expectations would not always be 100% clear
    - Days where down time was excessive; and work wouldn't begin until PM hours (leading to inevitable late nights)
    - Very senior heavy group lead to junior folks being spread thin to take on time consuming grunt work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Hire more junior people to spread around work load
    - Work with middle level managers to be more supportive of junior folks (i.e. to provide clearer instruction, have a little more patience, help develop personally and professionally)
    - Encourage more social outings to help group bond more

    Recommends
    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
